Discover "le Grand Sudbury"

French FlagWith one of the largest French-speaking populations outside of Quebec, le Grand Sudbury is everywhere.

Home of the flag. Created and first raised in Sudbury in 1975, the Franco-Ontarian flag has been an official provincial symbol since 2001. Check out huge specimens at École secondaire Sacré-Coeur and Collège Boréal.

Higher education. The first institution to offer university-level education in Northern Ontario was a French classical college. Collège du Sacré-Coeur was established here in 1913. Today Sudbury boasts the French Collège Boréal and the bilingual Université Laurentienne.

“Nouvel-Ontario”. In the sixties, the “Nouvel-Ontario” movement emerged in Sudbury and launched the cultural renaissance of modern French Ontario.

Home to the stars. Recording artists Robert Paquette, CANO, Brasse-Camarade, Chuck Labelle, Konflit, Stef Paquette, Serge Monette and Antoine Tremblay- Beaulieu all hail from Sudbury.

Lights, camera, action. The producers of Météo+ have returned to Sudbury to film Les Bleus de Ramville, a TV series that follows the exploits of a senior’s hockey team in a fictitious northern Ontario town.

Award-winning authors. Sudburybased poet Robert Dickson and playwright Jean Marc Dalpé won the Governor General’s Award. Novelist Melchior Mbonimpa won the Trillium Award.
