Local Favourites

Greater Sudbury’s diverse ethnic population has introduced several traditional entrées to both resident and restaurant kitchens. Savoury porketta, a seasoned boneless pork roast of Italian culinary tradition, is available at many local butchers and grocery stores. Porketta Bingo is a popular pasttime at a host of local venues and porketta sandwiches and soup also appear on restaurant menu boards.

Homemade perogies are the local dumpling of choice. These half circular dumplings of Ukrainian and Polish culinary tradition are stuffed with various combinations of mashed potatoes, cheese, sauerkraut, mushrooms or spinach, topped with fried onions and bacon or butter, and served with sour cream. Seasonally, perogies can also be found plump with blueberries.

Fresh pickerel is another seasonal favourite, pan seared, corn-meal crusted or otherwise delicately prepared by many local chefs.
